March 9th 2008 06:05
Hello blogosphere! I am back with the next installment of Watching Youtube.
Thanks for all the votes and the support. If you like the blog/site/concept please tell your friends and subscribe to the site. Let's begin as we always do
IN THE NEWS!!!!
Well she did it! Hilary Clinton won Texas and Ohio this week keeping her in the race for president. Maybe it was the fear mongering ad featured in the last watching youtube or maybe it was this celebrity endorsement from Jack Nicholson that did the trick. Though Obama supporters made their witty reply. No doubt lots of people are hoping for the dream ticket between the two senators but the big question would remain would Clinton or Obama get the top billing.
Last month was a massive month for the indigenous people of Australia who finally got an an apology for the practice of removing aboriginal children from their families. Those children became known as The Stolen Generation (a warning to indigenous viewers that the video may contain images of deceased persons). The previous Prime Minister John Howard steadfastly refused to say sorry (that video is one of mine!!!!)
HAPPENING STUFF
From time to time YouTube likes to feature artists on the site - at the moment they are giving time and cyberspace to Icelandic Ambient rockers Sigur Ros who are using YouTube to promote their new 97 minute film - all of which is on a single clip on youtube
Heima is the film that has so far received 220,000 hits - remarkable given it is 97 minutes long. Heima by the way is Homeland in Icelandic. The band is responsible for some truly beautiful music and brillian music videos. Please look at some of these
svefn-G-Englar uses a special needs theatre group from Iceland (most of them have Downs Syndrome) performing a play about the elements. It is really beautiful
Untitled#1 (Vaka) the clip is about children playing in a post nuclear apocalyptic world. Truly amazing
Legendary British (or should that be bwitish) comedian Rik Mayall wrote and narrated this fantastic little surreal video - features William Shakespeare and it's called Me & My Goldfish its funny in an absurdist Rik Mayall kind of way
Also worth a look is American hip hop dance crew Jabbawockies this is a trailer for their dvd step up.
And out in theatres in the States and doing roaring business is the film Spiderwick Chronicles where there is an other world with mythical creatures. It looks great.
THIS SPORTING LIFE.
Let's kick off sport with NBA TV's top 10 plays of the week.
For cricket fans India beat Australia in the final of the Commonwealth bank series but on YouTube there was far more interest in an incident where Andrew Symonds took out a streaker giving him a shoulder charge that most rugby players would be proud of
And from tales of the bizarre - we all know that diving/play acting/simulation occurs alot in Football (soccer) but this member of the Women's Chinese team takes it all to a new level - someone give this girl as Oscar!
NOSTALGIA
On the very first watching youtube post I had a classic sesame street moment. I thought it was time again to check out some of Jim Hensons terrific muppets. One of my favourite Charaters from the show was the Swedish chef (the head was operated by Henson and the hands were done by Frank Oz). His cooking segments are legendary - here's a sample
Meatballs
Donuts
Chocolate Mousse
Lobsters
Cake
From the music archives I thought we could take a look at some of the early work of INXS. Here's a sample of some of their clips
Don't Change

It's been a controversial summer of cricket in Australia so I thought I might revisit that most controversial of Australian cricketing moments the infamous underarm delivery.
YouTube HALL OF FAME
Saturday Night Live - DICK IN A BOX
When is a youtube video not a youtube video??? When it was on YouTube but then taken down by the network that created it and put on their own website with ads and censorship. Here it is with the link coming from NBC
SNL Comedian Andy Samberg wrote this comedy gem "DIck in a box" in a R & B boy band style so who better than Mr Justin Timberlake to join him in performing it. The censors bleeped out the word 'dick' but the show took the unsual step of releasing an uncensored version on YouTube. Well it would probably be the most popular video ever if not for a strange decision to remove it and put it on the NBC website censored and with ads (as I have presented it) but it had more than 40,000,000 hits when it was taken off and showed how the big networks could use YouTube to get their more risque stuff out there. For this (and the fact it is hilariously funny) I thought it needed to be included in the YouTube HALL OF FAME.
That's it - until the next installment of Watching Youtube take care
Oh and you can also see the YouTube Hall of fame in it's complete form at [LINK=http://www.videotoes.com]www.videotoes.com
Bye till next time
