Second Post - News, arts, cool stuff, Sport, nostalgia all on YouTube
February 23rd 2008 06:40
First of all - THANKYOU to everyone who came along to the first post of my new blog Watching
YouTube!
Well I hope you are getting the hang of my little blog and it is
making sense - I just point you in the direction of YouTube videos
that I think are worth watching. I do this under certain categories so
that you can find more stuff that you think you'd enjoy (so if you're
not into sport just skip the This Sporting Life section). All you have
to do is click on the highlighted text to be taken to the video - but
remember to come back to the blog (you never know what gems could be next on the list)
Quite a few people have sent in there own suggestions and favourite
video clips from YouTube (some of which I will feature in this post).
If you have any ideas or suggestions for great YouTube clips please
message me, leave a comment or email me at killerspud@gmail.com
On with the show
1. IN THE NEWS!!!!!!!!!!!
All aboard the Obama train. The Democratic senator from Illinois is stealing the march from early favourite Hilary Clinton for his party's nomination. Obama has just won the primaries in Wisconsin and Hawaii
making it 10 straight victories (that video is a beautiful portrait of him growing up in Hawaii). Clinton desperately needs to win Texas and Ohio early in March to prove she is still a contende (though I think most people would dearly love to see them on a joint ticket). On the Republican side the nominee almost certainly will be
John McCain after his victories in the Wisconsin and Hawaii primaries. His rivals Mike Huckerbee with full endorsement from Chuck Norris and Ron Paul are still remaining in the race though it is now mathematically impossible for either of them to win the nomination. McCain knows as much as is turning his attention to attacking the Obama as he becomes the more likely Democratic candidate though he is now facing fresh allegations about having an affair with a lobbyist.
There are other things happening in the world - one region that is certainly facing testing times is Pakistan who have had elections. The whole process has been thrown into disarray by the recent assassination of leading opposition figure and one time Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto. There seemed to be almost daily violence related to the election campaign. Opposition parties have formed a coalition that seems to spell the end for the party of incumbent president
Parvez Musharraf.
Another area where there is great political tension and instability is
the fledgling nation of East Timor - There again was an assassination
attempt on President Ramos Horta and a separate attempt on Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao. The man believed to be responsible, rebel leader Reinando was killed in the attacks. Prime minister Gusmao escaped but President Ramos Horta was shot in the stomach and is in a critical but stable condition.
2. HAPPENING STUFF.
One reader of the first installment of this blog directed me to the
videos of Norweigan video artist Lasse Gjertsen. If you have the time
please take a look at one of these amazing videos
Amateur
Daydream 1
Daydream 2
The beauty and imagination of these clips is astounding and I hope you
enjoy them as much as I did. There are some similarities to Lasse's
work with that of my favourite music video director Michel Gondry.
There's plenty of great animation on YouTube (I think the format of
YouTube makes it perfect for young animators to get their work out
there and recognized). Here is a dazzling little animation by Thomas
Giusiano and Mathieu Rey.
Chaplin
An animated Charlie Chaplin falls into a Speilberg universe. Includes
Jurassic Park, Indiana Jones and ET references as well as references
to Chaplin - again stunning work.
In terms of bizarre but really interesting new music check out a
release called iBand.
Basically its three handheld electronic devices (an iPhone with the
keyboard application, some kind of nintendo with a music creation app
and a pocket guitar thing) and they create a little electronic band.
The result is quite listenable.
The band the Foo Fighters have been running a competition open to all
musicians to accompany them on stage to play the song The Pretender at the Grammy awards. There have been literally hundreds of these with cellists, trumpeters, clarinetists in fact all manner of instrumentalists getting in on the act. Here are but a few of the auditions.
Tara Klein
Luis Alberto
Cameron Summers
And finally here's a trailer for the academy award nominated
documentary No End In Sight a compelling look at the Iraq war by film maker Charlie Ferguson.
3. THIS SPORTING LIFE
The big news in sport this week comes from the world of cricket where
the Indian Premier League has it's
player auction. There was an astonishing amount of money spent buy the eight new indian 20/20 franchises on getting the world's best players.
Another big story involving sport came in the news that director Steven
Spielberg has quit as a creative consultant to the Beijing Olympic games. He cited concerns over China's role in the ongoing Dalfur conflict in Sudan.
And for the soccer fans here's a goal from Carlos Tevez for Manchester United in its 1-1 draw with Lyon in the Champions league.
4. YouTube TRENDS
Want to make a video that gets a million plus hits on YouTube????
It's simple - just make anything you want BUT right in the exact
middle of it put in a short clip of something that promises sex or
titillation. That's because YouTube uses the midpoint of your clip as
the screen shot for the clip. Now tag it with lots of naughty words
and just wait for the horny to come looking for your video. If you
don't believe me click
here.
Just as well you have me looking for all the best clips on YouTube
5. CELEBRITY TRASH
Well she's pop music's greatest survivor, The queen of Kaballah has
done a big long interview with German TV on her film directing debut
Filth and Wisdom
While I could include
Michael Jackson in
a section of weird celebrity trash tabloid stories I'd prefer to see
him in...
6. NOSTALGIA
Yes it's the 25th anniversary of the release of Michael Jackson's
Thriller album. Along with an array of dazzling hit songs Michael
Jackson also revolutionised the music video - using story, character
and genre like no one before him. I thought it would fun to look at a
few
Beat It
Billie Jean
Here's the link to the
25th anniversary album

And for a bit of amusement here's a
Bollywood take on
it and one done by
hundred's of
prisoners infact 1,500 plus CPDRC inmates of the Cebu
Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center, Cebu, Philippines
Growing up as a kid I loved the cartoon's that Warner Brothers made in
the 1950's. Best known for the characters of Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck
here are two that are less well known but are among my favourites.
Three Little Bops
One Froggy Evening
7. YouTube HALL OF FAME
here it goes again
The second inductee is from a formley unknnown indie pop band called Ok Go. They made a music video using a series of treadmills organised in opposite directions. Then had them performing a choreographed routine and then cut it to their catchy little song [LINK=http://youtube.com/watch?v=pv5zWaTEVkI]Here It Goes Again.
Original, visually clever and funny it put the band on the map and got them a following.
It is one of the most viewed clips with over 30,000,000 hits - the 3 minute clip is officially the 23rd most viewed clip and the 5th favourite
That's it for another Watching YouTube blog. Please keep giving me ideas for more videos to go in. Thanks for reading, till next time
