Welcome to our new home. It's too easy to find - www.watchingyoutube.com
Please update your bookmarks and subscriptions and TELL YOUR FRIENDS!!!
For those of you who haven't come across this blog before this is the easiest and best place to find those video gems on youtube that are hidden amongst the millions of video blogs by angst ridden teens. What I do is have sections based on news, sport, pop culture, the arts, nostalgia and youtube trends. I'm also doing a YouTube Hall of Fame which is those videos that have been seen by millions and have caused people to sit up and take note. So on with the show.
IN THE NEWS!!!!
The US presidential elections continue to be the big story - the lastest news is that Ralph Nader is again running as an independant to see if can split the democrat vote like he did in 2000 to give Bush the presidency.
Barack Obama and Hilary Clinton have debated each other 20 times now - the most recent of which was in Cleveland Ohio where they debatedseveral issues including healthcare.
One of the world's most tragic conflict spots is the Dafur region of Western Sudan. A process of systematic genocide has seen the death of more than 200,000 people and the displacement of a further 2.5 million. This video is about the women of Dafur and the hell they have been through. Also of interest is this trailer for the documentary Darfur Now. The issue is also of concern to China who is the major trading partner of Sudan and who's support of the regime there is seeing some people calling for a boycott of the Beijing Olympics. This is a situation that must be addressed as the murder and rape of innocent people is on going on a daily basis (and we wait like we did with Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Congo, etc).
HAPPENING STUFF!!
The 80th Academy Awards have been run and won with the Coen brothers film No Country For Old Men. Other highlights were Marion Cotillard win for La Vie En Rose. My favourite moment was the performance of the song Falling Slowly and then the winning acceptance speech by the writer Glen Hansard and the wonderful moment when the host John Stewart brought back the other writer Marketa Irglova.
YouTube is a haven for nerds like me - someone realising this made this great little video featuring girls who are every nerds complete fantasy 1-900-NERD-GIRL is a lot of fun
Comedienne Sarah Silverman decided to go on boyfriend Jimmy Kimmel's show and inform him in song that she's been getting to know actor Matt Damon in the biiblical sense its funny made more so the actors appearence in the clip. It's part of a running gag on the Jimmy Kimmel Show where They are always running out of time before they can get Matt Damon on the show.
Here's an outstanding stop motion animation video - Tony vs Paul. Writer/directors Paul Cummings & Tony Fiandaca battle stop motion mortal combat style in this 5 minute extravaganza.
THIS SPORTING LIFE
Well to start This sporting life I thought we'd take a look at some of the best from the NBA - The NBA have their own YouTube channel and put up their Top Ten Plays of the Week so book mark this channel if slam dunking is your thing.
From the english Premier league comes the sad news of this serious injury to Eduardo Da Silva.Arsenal's brazillian star had his leg seriously broken in this tackle by Birmingham's Martin Taylor and faces a long rehabilitiation to play again.
Just when you thought that the cricket world will grow up and just play the game comes this act of stupidity from Matthew Hayden who decided to use Brisbane radio to tell everyone he thought Harbhajan Singh was an obnoxious weed. Hayden has proved if anything he is the obnoxious weed and shows immaturity far beyond his 36 years.
YouTube TRENDS
Anyone who has ever learnt the piano and got to some level would have played Beethoven's Fur Elise but how many of them videoed themselves and put it on YouTube???Evidently quite a few - in fact you can search for just about any piece of music and someone has played it, taped themselves and put it on YouTube. From the famous musicians like the pianist Horowitz playing Mozart's sonata in C to 8 year old Mayada playing the same thing. If you don't believe me just type in any piece of music you can think of and see what comes up (like this version of burgmuller's study in C-minor arranged for a latin groove - by Nelri Hanekom.
NOSTALGIA
One of the great things about YouTube is getting re-aquainted with things from your past. Growing up I used to watch alot of television particularly in the afternoons as a kid coming home from school. I watched a mixture of american stuff from the 1950's,60's and 70's and british stuff from the 70's and 80's. Here then are the memorable openng credits from some of those shows
The Goodies
Get Smart
Gilligan's Island
Batman
Monkey Magic
Actually the guy who played monkey magic, Masaaki Saki, was in a Japanese pop group in the 1960's called The Spiders
My wife has just alerted me to a great Australian independant band from the 1980's called The Moffs, their psychadelic sounds are like a 1980's Australian version of Pink Floyd.
And for the Smiths fans out there here are a few classic songs
Bigmouth Strikes Again
The Boy With The Thorn In His Side
This Charming Man
How Soon Is Now
Listen out for Johnny Marr's superb guitar work, one of the finest musicians going around.
YouTube HALL OF FAME
No. 3 FREE HUGS CAMPAIGN
Juan Mann, inspired by seeing people meeting and greeting each other at the airport, set about getting the feel good feeling in the general community and went out into the streets of Sydney armed with only a sign that said 'Free Hugs', hundreds responded to the offer and the outpouring of joy and friendship of this action was then set to the music of the Sick Puppies and put on YouTube for all to see. While Juan has had his campaign halted by over officious public liability laws, the youtube video has been watched by nearly 25,000,000 people and is among the most favoured and commented on clips of all time. It is a worthy addition to our YOUTUBE - HALL OF FAME
That's it for another post, please let me know if you have any favourite videos on YouTube that you would like others to know about. I look forward to hearing from you out there. Stay safe till next time.

Film Banana
Your blog is very diverse which is a good way to keep your finger on the pulse. it can be so easy to get carried away with one thing and almost forget that anything else outside of that world exists. Thumbs up, especially for the Get Smart reference. It's not really related other than it is by Mel Brooks also, but you should check out a film called 'High Anxiety' if you haven't already. There are moments in that film which will make you cry with laughter.
