Watching YouTube - Welcome to the first installment
February 19th 2008 04:46
Hello, thanks for coming to or stumbling by my new blog Watching YouTube!
Basically I was tired ot trying to find all the things I wanted to see on YouTube - they are the things that most people want to watch but you have to find out by word of mouth, posts by your friends on facebook walls and things that hit the wider media. The way this blog will operate will be in sections newstories of note, all things pop culture, a feature interview with someone who does stuff on YouTube, a couple of the weeks interesting sporting moments, a look at trends on YouTube, celebrity stuff for those who like their trash, nostalgia clips, the riotously funny things you find floating about, a regional focus and finally an addition to my YouTube Hall Of Fame. The text is full of links to YouTube videos that show what is being described so feel free to click on any of them to watch a video - just don't forget to return to the blog!!!
1. IN THE NEWS!!!!!!!!!!!
The biggest story getting constant coverage on YouTube at the minute is the US presidential elections. While the candidates contesting the Democrat nomination Hilary Clinton and Barack Obama have official YouTube profiles where the camapaign can keep the message out there, there videos made by their supporters have a more 'Gloves are off' kind of feel to them. Here's a muck raking sample from both Clinton supporters and from Obama supporters - though they could equally have been made by conservatives wanting to discredit both candidates.
Here is my take on the election with the first of my American Election Reports with Ignatious P Richards
In more global news the other big story is the announcement of an independent Kosovo, as the CNN report shows that Serbian people are protesting while the majority Albanian people in Kosovo are celebrating. In fact those celebrations can be seen in communities all over the world from New York to London. Not all videos were celebrations or shows of support to the new country. This video shows the US embassy in Belgrade as the subjet of a protest against the decision to support Kosovan statehood. Certainly a situation to monitor in coming weeks.
2. HAPPENING STUFF
Well not even pop culture is immune from the US presidential election. The video for Yes We Can takes parts of speeches made by Barack Obama and mashes it up with celebrities singing and rapping along. Who would have thought Scarlett Johansson could sing?
I found another very cool new music video from a rap group from Australia - the group is called Bouncer and the song is Rock Tha Mic.
YouTube presents opportunities for people sitting at home with a computer and a guitar the ability to get noticed even faster than those Idol shows - and because you don't have TV producers creating images and tensions between people for the sake of ratings (I know I've worked on those types of show) what you get is just the artist and their music. Julia Nunes is a great example and her song Into the Sunshine was featured on YouTube.
We are coming up to the Oscars (thank goodness the writers Strike is over!) and I can't wait to see how my favourite television satirist Jon Stewart goes in hosting the much anticipated Academy awards. There are some truly great films nominated this year so I thought I'd give you the YouTube links to the nominees
Atonement
Juno
Michael Clayton
No Country For Old Men
There Will Be Blood
3. YouTube TRENDS
This is another regular segment in this blog which will look at a trend among YouTube videos, it can be to do with content or style. In the first of these I'd like to note the well edited tribute video to a film or television show. Take this example of a tribute to the Tv show Family Guy. These videos play around with the sound track and use some slick editing to make something new but obviously comes from an original source. Here are some others to check out
Homer Simpson (from The SImpsons)
Newman (from Seinfeld)
The GodFather
4. THIS SPORTING LIFE!!
Well for those of you who like Sport 2008 is going to be an amazing year with the Olympic Games in August. Here on Watching YouTube we will have a few sporting picks to keep you up to date with the best plays from around the world. And to start how about this pearl of a goal from Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo pure magic! And for whet the appetite for Beijing here's the 100 metres Men's sprint finalfrom the Athens Olypics four years ago.
5. Trash
For celebrity trash there is only one word and that word is
Britney
I promise that is the first and last time she will ever get a mention on this blog
6. NOSTALGIA
Many people post great clips that they have had for years on video tape, here are two of my favourite.
Being a puppeteer, I love Sesame Street and some of the old sketches they did on the show with puppets are still hysterical. This is a Classic Sesame Street Video - cat hat fat sat and features the little puppet guy responsible for the muppets classic mahna mahna.
Also two classic performances for you - first is Stevie Wonder playing an amazing drum solo the talent of the man is just phenomenal. The second is an early clip of Nick Cave and the Birthday Party I think it was for german television but it certainly shows the raw power of his performances.
7. THE YouTube HALL OF FAME - 1st ever inductee
Well I thought I would introduce a Hall of fame section where each post I'd feature a video that had been ground breaking or extremely popular or just generally sums up what this new means of communication and entertainment is all about.
For the very first inductee into the YouTube Hall of Fame I thought you couldn't go past the Evolution of Dancevideo. In this six minute extravaganza comedian Judson Laippy takes the audience through a dance routine of about thirty different dance styles from the world of pop culture. So popular is it that he has set up his own website www.evolutionofdance.com hereand sells his own merchandise.
The video is the most watched video ever - with more than 75,000,000 views to date!!!!
Well that's all for this first edition of Watching YouTube, in coming weeks we'll have interviews with some of the best known content creators and new segments. Keep watching YouTube and subscribe to this blog. All feedback is much appreciated.
